As this topic seems to stay controversial, we should think of finding a solution
the community can live with.

On [EMAIL PROTECTED] there have been many important comments. I'd like take a
few of
them:

mh: We are able to provide users information about new builds, which
* offers solutions two potential security fixes
* and put little pressure on users to update their versions.

stx12: I would consider a missing description in the readme (a paragraph about
the fact that OOo connects to the Internet and a firewall might be
triggered) and the installation wizard ("- connects to the Internet") a
showstopper for 2.0.4.

pjanik (direct response): which technically means, we have to provide new time
for translators.

cloph: The online-update still doesn't work with localized builds, even less so
with language packs. So for these users the auto-update is "useless"
anyway.

My conclusion is:
1) add a string like the following to the English builds:

--- string to be included in the last entry of the installation wizard ---

This version of OpenOffice.org includes an online
update notification that informs you when updated
versions of the program are available.

For that reason OpenOffice.org will access Internet
once every week.

You may customize this feature in the Tools menu:
Options - OpenOffice.org - Online Update.

(I attach a screenshot of this installer page to this issue)

2) Change the behaviour to opt-in for localized version
- translations would not be able to be finished in time
- the update notification is not that useful for their users as for the users of
the English version.

This could be managed in quite a short time and RC3 would not be delayed even
longer by this discussion.
