thanks for this explanation, now it is much more clear to me :)

1. what are the thoughts on reducing surrounding area ? this would give more 
space for actual 
content. of course, it might be critical for some cases...

2. i know that options are hated by many, but maybe make limits optional, but 
only changable in 
config files directly.

this way, users can create documents with any size, but forcing them to jump 
through finding out 
_how_ and making them edit files should allow to inform them about implications 
(though some 
very braindead explanation would have to be written :) ) and clearly 
communicate the point that this 
is possible, but can bork things.

this would be  an intermediate solution until proper solution is ready.
are there any at least vague estimates on oo.org version/timeframe when large 
page sizes could 
be possible without or with small enough risk ?
what would be the maximal size with the planned doubled precision ?
