Hmmm....  This fixes the immediately visible catastrophe, but:

A) It still makes the XHTML document bigger than it needs to be.

B) It still makes the XHTML harder to post-process.

C) Am I to understand that this merely reflecting the state of the innards of
the OASIS file? But how did it get that way in the first place? Certainly it
would be best all-round to catch these cases, as soon as they come into
existence? Though it cost a little during the editing, yet it would save disk
space for the file, save processing every time the file is read back in -- heck,
every time the user scrolls the screen or prints or does just about anything.
