Precisely. The user interface and the font selection suffers when OTF fonts are
in use. There are ways to convert these fonts, but all of the conversion
methods are lossy: PS Type 1 fonts are limited to a certain number of glyphs,
and TTF fonts can't preserve vital kerning information, as I understand it.

It was my impression that OOo was built on GTK+; seeing this strange behavior
with the fonts leads me to believe that this is not the case, as other apps that
are built on GTK+ (Firefox, Pidgin, Gnumeric, Nautilus, Evince, and Abiword)
have support for viewing and printing such fonts, including Fontin.

I suppose, then, that the question comes down to whether or not the wheel has to
be reinvented or not; it looks like that OOo doesn't use the font engine of the
host system, but uses its own instead. Would it be difficult to use the host
system's font engine? After all, if someone desires a proofed copy of a
document, that's what PDF is for, isn't it?
