Open Insert > Special Character. Choose character U+00AD and > click OK: Soft hyphen is inserted (as if you just used Ctrl+-) and behaves as > expected. but I put U-00AD directly by keyboard (xmodmap allows me to assign it to a key). Same problem with nobreakspace (U-00A0).
