Thanks for the rapid response. It seems that there are two ways to edit a
paragraph style and because the differences are not made clear the result can be
very confusing (and in my case caused me to waste a lot of time).

1. If I select a heading with a style that I wish to change, then right click I
get an option to change the paragraph style. I get no warning that although the
text panel refers to the style (e.g. heading 2) it will change ONLY this
instance, e.g. if I change the font or font size.

(Moreover, in OO 2.0.4 changing the style for this instance can corrupt the font
specification in the main style record -- e.g.I selected times-roman-bold and
later found it had been changed to arial-bold-italic for that paragraph style.
This is in the version of OO installed in my department, I'll check whether that
is fixed in 2.3, when I get home.)

2. If I select the 'Styles and formatting' icon, or go to 'Format->styles and
formatting' or press F11, I get a list of styles and if I right click on a
header style I get a 'Modify' option. That brings up a panel that is very
similar to the one got by method 1, and allows the user to change the font size
for a style, after which it is automatically applied to all instances, which was
what I wanted. However, as you point out that can fail for some instances. See
the point made below about the need to be able to override a hard setting.

3. If I try method 2 for the 'Default' style and try to change the line spacing
it has no effect. I have to select the style for every paragraph of type
Default. (I don't know if that is because the file I am editing was created by
latex2rtf from a latex file, then converted to .doc by OO.

When I get home I'll see if this problem still exists in 2.3.

It looks as if I should file a documentation bug report because these
differences were not clear in the documentation file on style changing.

Also when a style panel for changing a paragraph style comes up it should have a
very clear indication whether the changes made will or will not affect all
instances, and in the case that it does not the user should be warned that
changing the style for one paragraph can prevent future changes being inherited.

There should be a way to over-ride the "hard format" which may have been
selected unintentionally by someone trying to make a global change -- like me!

Thanks.
Aaron
