Actually those are mot really hidden if you start at
  http://lingucomponent.openoffice.org
(the OOo linguistics homepage) you need just to follow the link to the download
dictionaries and then again to the 'Dictionaries sorted by language' link.

First:
By corecting the existing dictionary do you mean you edited the file en_US.dic?
Or was it some other file?

Also just curious because of 'upgrade' is a rather unclear term when it comes to
e.g. spell check dictionaries:
Do you mean
a) Upgrade to a newer version of OOo or
b) Upgrade to a newer version of the downloadable dictionary
namely by using DicOOo (i.e. using the dictionary wizard) or
c) doing a manual upgrade by copying the required files on your own

Finally with the implementation of issue 81365 all known problems with upgrading
a dictionary or OOo itself should be gone. That is when finally the existing
dictionaries will have been converted to extensions.

If you like to that on your own please have a look at
  http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Extension_Dictionaries

Also you may check out the lingucomponent mailing list which currently has a
thread about dictionary extensions.

And finally a working dictionary extension for French as reference can already
be found here
  http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/project/fr-dic

If you do it similar you should have no problem.
Also dictionary extension will currently only work with the latest developer
build. And hopefully with the upcoming OOo 3.0 Beta there will already a lot of
dictionaries converted to extensions.

Thus you may try out the current developer build or wait for OOo 3.0 Beta.

Please try it out!
So far I think you problem is already fixed (aside from the dictionaries not yet
being provided as extensions) thus I will leave this issue without target for a
few days.
If you do not find no further problem in some days I will set this issue to
'works-for-me' and close it.

But I'd prefer if you could explicitly state your problem as being solved. ;-)
