Extensions are identified by the extensions identifier (since it was invented)
and nothing else. We may expand this later to identifier + platform + locale.
The identifier is important,

-when installing another version of the extension. The Extension Manager will
not accept that both version are installed alongside.

-during the on-line update. The Extension Manager receives a list of all
available extensions from the repository and looks for extension with exactly
the same id which match those of the installed extensions.

If the identifier is not unique, say you have different instances of the same
logical extension which support different platforms, then the Extension Manager
may offer an extension as update which does not fit the user's platform.

Making the identifier unique can be done by putting the platform in the
identifier or anything else. However, this identifier must then remain the same
forever. Changing the identifier later, will cause that previous versions cannot
be updated (on-line) anymore.
