FWIW I reckon a Wingdings->OpenSymbol fontconfig alias probably wouldn't be a
good idea as there's the necessity to use a custom recode to get the right
glyphs so it wouldn't really work out-of-the box for a generic app no ? That
said, perhaps should really make our own font called "Opendings" or sommat and
place the opensymbol glyphs into it at the same position as the Wingdings one
and then that'd work.

wrt to the fontconfig conf files, I think our fontconfig guys upstreamed into
the fontconfig defaults the mapping of "Times New Roman" == "Thorndale" ==
"Thorndale AMT" == "Liberation Serif" and so on for the Arial and Courier
families. i.e.

        <alias binding="same">
          <family>Liberation Serif</family>
          <family>Thorndale</family>
          <family>Thorndale AMT</family>
          <default>
          <family>Times New Roman</family>
          </default>
        </alias>

is what I have here locally out-of-the-box
