------- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sat Aug 23 20:40:33 +0000 2008 ------- I prepared a document in Writer and exported it as a PDF. I copied it to my Win95a computer with Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 and Canon i560's native printer driver locally and printed with the Print as image checkbox on. That froze the computer (not the mouse pointer), so each time the Cancel button failed and I had to end the task via ctrl-alt-del. Unchecking Print as Image (after setting up again to print) allowed me to go ahead with printing. The problem did not occur on my Win98SE computer with Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.1 printing to the same printer through the 95a computer connected via direct cable or a public WinXP computer printing to a networked printer; printing with and without the option worked each time. My OOo Linux laptop is not set up for printing, so I couldn't test it on that platform. The problem is that many PDFs, perhaps all made using Adobe's software, require Print as image or many word spaces disappear, resulting in wordsgettingmashedsolidlytogether. Thus, I leave that on as a default. Having to uncheck that for Writer-made PDFs only is not an obvious step. I used OOo Writer 2.4.0 without Java Runtime Environment on Linux Fedora Core 4 on a Pentium 4 laptop to export as PDF and set these options: Writer > File menu > Export as PDF > PDF Options dialog: -- General tab > General > Create PDF form > Submit format > PDF -- Security tab > Printing > High resolution -- Security tab > Changes > Not permitted It appears that Writer-exported PDFs differ from Adobe-made PDFs in some way that afflicts printing on older sotfware.
