@harveyab: you'd need the feature "symbol aliasing" i.e. so that U+F0xx behaves 
just like U+00xx. This 
only works for symbol-fonts, e.g. WingDings. I suggest you use e.g. fontforge 
to convert the fonts you 
linked to from fake-unicode to symbol-encoding. In other words if the fonts 
CMAP ids are converted to 
symbol-counterpart (.e.g the format4 table just needs to change from 3.1 to 
3.0) then everything should 
work fine.

OOo supports the unicode standard and doesn't support fake-unicode fonts. E.g. 
a font that has mapped  
all japanese-punctuation glyphs into the cyrillic unicode area  will probably 
result in funny results too => 
resolving the issue as INVALID
