I am not sure that I really understand your reply, but I also think that there
is still a real problem here.
The font I am working with does happen to be Hebrew, but it may as well be a
Symbol font because it is involving Ancient Hebrew that looked VERY different
from modern Hebrew and even has 23 letters instead of 22. Therefore it cannot
properly be mapped into the "normal" Hebrew Unicode space (I suppose).
But without regard to all that, the character widths are very wrong.
Why?
What am I missing?

What is a "format4 table" and how do I change it to 3.0? And why?
