Maybe your copy of Wordpad is too old and not capable of opening Word 97 and
newer files?
On my XP machine it is possible to open both files with Word 2003. The
"This_will_crash_Wordpad.doc" can be opened with Wordpad on my WinXP.
Wordpad will refuse the other one to open because it is Word6 / 95 format (but
not crash, will give message "Cannot open Word 95 files").
