You are completely right!
It even does not work in the latest version of the stylesheets.
I have been testing to switch the XHTML filter into an OOo extension, making it
easier to update even outside the OOo cycles.
Please find the latest sources as extension attached (won't find time to
continue my work on it the next month due to my focus on ODFDOM /
odftoolkit.org)..
