Either there are shown „empty boxes“ instead of missing characters or the characters are shown - but obviously using another font. in this case only if printing, there appear boxes instead of the characters. So the second behavior is worse. If there were missing characters here too, I would prefere, to see a warning or such boxes at the monitor. To see nothing instead of a non-breaking-hyphen is as bad as to see everything fine on monitor and to get printout missing charcters.
