I have not tested the Word95 or Word 6-format. I have been using Writer since 2002 under MS Windows and changed to Linux (OpenSuse) in late 2007. The effect occurred first when I opened an existing document, which was created with OOo 2.4.1 and in which all umlauts were destroyed when I saved the file.
