Certain character formatting, applied to either the initial characters of the
text of a list item, or to the entire text of the item, will also apply to the
item's list label. This is unwanted, inconsistent and difficult to prevent.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Create a numbered list, labeled using lowercase letters
(The attached document includes a sample list and instructions)
2) Select the first word of the text of one item.
3) Apply "small capitals": Format > Character > Font Effects > Effects: Small
capitals

See that the list label is also shown in small capitals.

The same problem occurs with the other formatting options in the Font
Effects/Effects group, and with Position/Spacing: Expanded or Condensed.

The same effect occurs with (almost) any character formatting, when the
formatting is applied to the entire text of the list item, and the formatting is
applied directly and not through a character style.

Please see the attached document for more information and explanation.

Frankly, I'm not sure what the exact bug is here--maybe there is more than one,
but, at minimum, Writer is behaving inconsistently, and I've not found any good
way to prevent the formatting from affecting the list label.
