OK, one last observation. Now that I got my db settled down, I went and updated
all the OOo installations on all my systems to 3.2 and tested them.

They all work flawlessly so far, Base wizards and all! Significantly, this
includes a Kubuntu 9.10 hardware system install running through the exact same
procedure I used on the Ubuntu vm with package removal of 3.1 and installation
of the .deb packages. The uninstall and reinstall was fast and clean.

Further, I don't know why I didn't think to test this but I must confess that I
don't think that I ever tested whether an empty db worked on the Ubuntu vm. This
is an obvious test, but I am not sure I tried it with all the installs and
uninstalls (which go slow on an encrypted vm running off a USB stick).

Here is what this tells me in the context of this bug report: my bug was likely
the result of one of two things:

1) The upgrade of my document from 2.4 to 3.1, and then to 3.2 (can't remember
whether I revert before going to 3.2 or not)
2) The platform switch from PPC to Intel Ubuntu

(or some combination of the two)

Given the clean functioning of these other installations it is probably a safe
bet that my bug could be rather unique and not very ubiquitous, which would also
explain why you guys seem so unconcerned.

So in retrospect, while I am certain it was a bug, I will give you it may be a
rather rare bug that most won't see.

Further, while my confidence was getting a little shaky there for a while in
Base, it is now fully restored to my pleasant surprise!!!

Change this to whatever you want. Bug or not, I will concede it is probably a
rare event.
