I am also an engineer and have been developing a similar extension for the same purpose, that is, to create standard calculation pages, see sourceforge.net/projects/ooo-imath. Up to now, it only runs under Linux, though. Windows port is in the making. Have a look at iMath-tour.odt to see what it can do.
