I did look through the source, but was lost in trying to recompile the source on my computer. It appears the printout format is a set of procedures that can be extended with additional routines. As for input formats, Open Office already can read in numbers with arbitrary number padding, including something like 32.456E003. This works just fine. SI units are a separate category of problem, requiring new input and output routines. Let's aim for the scientific output format first.
