Carlo, I can't help with schematic drawings, but the best description I've read was in The Bulletin of the American Rock Garden Society Jan. 1957, Vol. 15, No.1.  It's an article by Donald Yeager called "Growth Forms of Alpine Plants".  It's descriptions and examples of each type of form.

Subject: [Alpine-l] Schematic drawings of alpine plant forms...

I am once again renewing my search for schematic drawings of alpine plant forms (e.g. cushion, mat, sub-shrub, etc.).  I saw one or two pages of examples some years ago and have been unable to track them down. If anyone can help, please let me know.
