When I was faced with the problem of getting a clean gain stage for microphones, I looked at mic preamps, but found that two channels of good pre would cost about $300. Right at that time, Mackie came out with their VLZPro mic preamps in a couple of lower end mixers for almost the same price. I bought the 1202VLZ-Pro, which has four mono inputs, each with mic pre, and four stereo inputs, which are so great for connecting to a stereo soundcard, and monitoring other stereo sources.
The preamps sound very clean with a good set of large diaphragm condenser mics. I also found more uses for the utility of the mixer than I had expected. Most of the inputs and outputs are filled already. So, you might consider a good mixer, since you could take a chunk out of the investment with the money that you would have put into a new soundcard. Come to think of it, I haven't had to crawl under my desk to change soundcard inputs for quite some time. What a relief that is. > i guess this means getting a external mixer or different card for > now. _______________________________________________ Alsa-user mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/alsa-user
