Hi Mark, I'm in the process of getting my RME Digi96/8 to work properly, so I don't know about AES/EBU connections, but I reckon they're simply parallel to the s/pdif's.

Is it just not supported by the rme96 > driver, despite the settings for it? aplay -D plughw:0,1 somefile.wav plays out to the ADAT port and plughw:0,0 to the spdif. There's also something in /etc/asound.state that you may want to fiddle with.
