After much trial I was finally was able to get sound
working on my linux box.
But I still have a few issues. As of now I am unable
to play a Cd or anything of that sort. The only time
when I do hear sound coming out of my PC is when I
start "esd" and when I play the "Tux race".
I somehow was also able to activate the sounds on
window events through the sawfish window manager, but
was unable to repeat the experiment.
Below is the log generated by the amixer utility
shipped with the alsa drivers and that of the
"/proc/modules"
Do u guys sense any problems here. I can see the CD
player recognizing all the tracks and paying it.. When
i do "cat /proc/modules"

After issuing modprobe, the last few lines of dmesg
might indicate what's going on.
