Something must be very wrong with your installation if you
can't even build amixer. envy24control uses the alsa mixer api
as well, so it's probably the same problem causing both symptoms.
Just to verify, did you:
* build a kernel with "Sound support" enabled as a module,
and NO other sound options (i.e. no soundcards enabled)
* boot with this kernel
* make modules; make modules_install with new kernel
* For each of alsa-driver, alsa-lib, and alsa-utils (IN THAT ORDER):
./configure (for alsa-driver you will want to do ./configure --help
and see what options look useful to you)
make
su
make install
