You can see most boot messages by typing "dmesg" in a shell.
Use shift-pageup/down to scroll back up the screen. You would
have to paste some exact error messages and let us know what
kernel version, ALSA version and distro version to get some
real help.

  modprobe -a snd-emu10k1
  lsmod

Should show a heap of modules.

For some reason there is no mention whatsoever of the ALSA drivers in dmesg. 

Acutally, I just noticed during a file system check what the messages were.  It says, "modprobe: snd-emu10k1: Can't locate module snd-emu10k1"  It then gives the same error messages for "snd-card".  Any ideas?
