Are you using devfs? If so, you'll probably need to set up your
/etc/devfsd.conf file (I think it's in the installation docs).

Use alsamixer (from alsa-utils) to set the volume sliders so that you
get output, then use alsactl to save and restore the mixer settings.
("alsactl store" and "alsactl restore")
