Basically, you should be using 0.9 for whichever kernel version you
have, since 0.5 is no longer developed or supported (I guess it's
"stable" in the sense that it's motionless ;)

Also, note that in 0.9 the -card has been dropped from the module names,
so snd-card-cs4236 has become snd-cs4236, which will obviously require
you to change your modules.conf.

Oh, and one more gotcha: make sure you move away your existing
/etc/asound.conf file, as that is now a totally different thing in 0.9
(mixer settings are now stored in /etc/asound.state) and you'll get
weird errors otherwise.
