Need some help here:
I am trying to upgrade ALSA, but I am getting stuck in the 0.9.0rc
series. 0.9.0rc5 works fine. 0.9.0rc6 also works, except that
"alsactl restore" complains:

when first installed and subsequently complains:
/usr/sbin/alsactl: set_control:960: Cannot write control '3:0:0:IEC958 Playback
Mask:0' : Operation not permitted
If I upgrade further to 0.9.0rc7, 0.9.1 or any later version, alsactl
complains as before, but worse than that any application such as
aumix, amixer, alsamixer hangs *hard* (I can't even kill -9 the
process).
Any ideas how I can investigate this further? Details of my system
are appended,
