You didn't specify the port/irq/dma parameters. This would be some
line like

        options snd-es1688 irq=1 dma=2 ...

(see ALSA's INSTALL file for a list of valid options and values)

Things like this often happens with ESS cards because there isn't much
useful documentation.

In theory, the ALSA driver could be fixed. In practice, you'd need to
find somebody who is willing to do it.
