As am I. I'm glad to hear it's not just my hardware (I was worried
about a blown component or bad speaker for a while.
I'm using 0.9.5, compiled from source. Here is my sound hardware:

If it helps matters any, using the current 2.4 kernel drivers sends the
sound out the mic port, and causes esd to crash, but produces sound
without crackling/humming. Actually, the sound sounds a lot like a
blown speaker to me.

I concur with Elmar. If there's anything I can do to help get this
issue resolved, or even some recommended troubleshooting steps I can
pursue on my own, I'd love to hear about it.
I found an old soundblaster card the other day, and was almost ready to
install it, just to have decent quality music again, but realized that
the card is ISA, and I don't have any ISA slots. Bummer..
