Hello, I have an Intel i845GE motherboard with onboard sound (ICH - Intel 82801DB-ICH4), which mostly works with the intel8x0 module, except for two problems.
When playing audio with "ogg123 -d alsa09", after between 1 and 2 minutes, ogg123 freezes and the sound stops. When I press Ctrl-C, ogg123 exits, and sound works again, except for this bug. The time before this happens isn't repeatable, but it always happens eventually. No messages are logged. I can't reproduce this with any program except ogg123, or with "ogg123 -d oss". This is with Linux 2.4.20-gentoo-r5, and alsa-driver 0.9.6 (0.9.2 also does this). With Linux 2.6.0-test1 (in-tree alsa-driver 0.9.4), I can't reproduce the above problem, but I do get some ominous messages. After the first few seconds of using sound, and again every second or so, I see this: Unexpected hw_pointer value (stream = 0, delta: -7, max jitter = 4096): wrong interrupt acknowledge? Also, much less frequently, I see: BUG: stream = 0, pos = 0x2000, buffer size = 0x2000, period size = 0x8 In case it makes a difference, a long time ago with OSS drivers, the sound would sometimes go dead when making loud noises in Unreal Tournament 2003. That's the only other problem I've had with this sound hardware (and it might have been a UT2003 bug). Anyway, hopefully somebody can figure out what's going on. I can give /proc/asound info and do more testing, if that's needed.
