hmm, a possible reason is that your ac97 codec seems having no spdif
bit.

please check whether you have "IEC958" entries in alsamixer.
if you have, it must be a bug in intel8x0.c.
otherwise, it's the bug of ac97 detection routine, or simply you don't
have it.

also, attach the contents of /proc/asound/card0/ac97#0 and ac97#0regs.
