Hi!
I have an Abit IS7 motherboard, which has the Intel 865PE / ICH5-R chipset
with the ALC650 CODEC onboard. I'm running Mandrake 9.1 with the
2.4.21-0.25mdk kernel. And I've downloaded and successfully installed ALSA
0.9.7a drivers, and 0.9.7 lib, oss, tools, utils.
Alas, all is not perfect - I cannot get sound out of my S/PDIF out on the
board. Now, I know the port works - when first trying to setup this system
two months ago, I had a similar setup (Mandrake 9.1 with ALSA 0.9.6)
producing sound out of the S/PDIF. In-between that point and now (during
which I've wiped and rebuilt the system several times trying to get SATA
working - I finally gave up on that... :), I tried installing Mandrake
9.2rc2, which I think had ALSA 0.9.6 included, and got S/PDIF out working
there as well.
Now I'm back to 9.1 and have a stable system (finally!) but without the
S/PDIF out I need. I have sound just fine out of the analog speakers, but
nothing from S/PDIF out. I know it's detecting it correctly -- alsamixer
shows the proper IEC958 entries, and I've tried nearly every combination of
those settings to get it to work -- no go.
At one point, I was hearing some very faint static through the connection to
my surround receiver - only while the system was powered, and it disappeared
on a reboot, and at another point (with analog speakers disconnected - don't
know if that's why, though) it was reporting that the incoming data on that
stream was "PCM STEREO UNK" -- normally it reports "NORMAL", which is why it
was even noticed in the first place.
So, in an attempt to cover everything, the rest of this message will be a
data dump (probably way too much) from various files on my system, some with
a few notes of interest. Hopefully someone will spot something, or can give
me a hint as to what to check out next -- I'm stumped.
Thanks,
-->Steve Bennett
