Hello All! I am using the built in sound of an Asus A7V8X motherboard which features the ALC650 chip. This generally gets detected as a Via 8235 both in Windows as well as Linux and the good news is that this does not seem to cause any problems. If I use the ALC driver instead of the VIA driver in Windows I get a few more options in the sound control panel, but it does not cause me any issues.
Using Windows XP, the sound quality is great, however under Linux this is a different story. The sound is fuzzy, particularly sounds in the higher end of the spectrum. I think I also had these problems before I switched across to the ALSA drivers, but to the be honest, I cannot remember. Any assistance that I can get to correct the problem would be great as I would much prefer to watch DVDs and play music under Linux (in fact I really would like to get rid of Windows shortly).
