I installed 1.0.0.rc2.  3 packages , source code , driver, lib and utils.  Drivers are the via82xx.

This is a Redhat 9.0 system with kernel 2.4.23.
Soundsupport (soundcore.o) compiled as a module.  As a matter of reference I ran alsaconf and /etc/modules.conf loads all the drivers fine.

alsasound status says drivers are loaded. However! I have not been able to get alsamixer to work (as per the instructions) I get a "function snd_ctl_open" failed for default and all other attempts (-c 0, 1 , 2....)
aplay .wav error main:502: audio open error: No such file or directory
aplay -l "no soundcard found...."
Oh and yes, no sound, though I have heard some crackling from time to time.
/proc/asound looks okay (not that I would truly know :))  Still a noob.
but what concerns me is no /dev/snd .  Should I be concerned about that ?  yes /dev/dsp exits, but it seems from purusing that /dev/snd is the preferred choice for device files.

I have checked and even rebuilt my modules to make sure no remnents of any other dirvers exists. (OSS, Via )
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
