I second Steve's advice: the CMedia PCI cards are fine -- my really cheap one
(equivalent of $10) had no S/PDIF output fitted, but I fitted it myself after
looking at the device datasheet for the right pin, and it works great.  If
you're using S/PDIF then even the most expensive card will sound exactly the
same since it is all digital.  It will either work 100% or not at all, its
not like there will be little noises and signal-to-noise bakeoffs.  Spend the
$290 left over on your kids :-)
