Hi all,

the last three days I tried to get ALSA playing MIDI without OSS
emulation. I failed and I hope, that you can help me.

First, some information about my system

Linux 2.6.3
alsa-lib 1.0.2
alsa-utils 1.0.2

=== ~ ===

Card information from 'lspci -v':

00:08.0 Multimedia audio controller: ESS Technology ES1978 Maestro 2E (rev
10)
        Subsystem: Compaq Computer Corporation: Unknown device b112
        Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 64, IRQ 11
        I/O ports at 3000 [size=256]
        Capabilities: [c0] Power Management version 2

=== ~ ===

>From my '/etc/modprobe.conf':

alias snd-card-0 snd-es1968
alias sound-slot-0 snd-es1968

=== ~ ===

My kernel's sound configuration:

CONFIG_SOUND=m
CONFIG_SND=m
CONFIG_SND_SEQUENCER=m
CONFIG_SND_OSSEMUL=y
CONFIG_SND_MIXER_OSS=m
CONFIG_SND_PCM_OSS=m
CONFIG_SND_SEQUENCER_OSS=y
CONFIG_SND_RTCTIMER=m
CONFIG_SND_VIRMIDI=m
CONFIG_SND_MPU401=m
CONFIG_SND_ES1968=m

=== ~ ===

Output of 'aconnect -o':

client 64: 'Rawmidi 0 - ESS ES1978 (Maestro 2E) MPU-401' [type=kernel]
    0 'ESS ES1978 (Maestro 2E) MPU-401'

I can play play wave files (or other files) without any problems using
directly the ALSA interface. But I can play MIDIs just with the OSS
emulation - with native ALSA I just don't hear anything (but I don't get
errors - wow :))

I guess its just a very stupid configuration mistake and I hope you give
me a hint to find it.

Any help is appreciated.

Bye,
Oliver
