any case I tried using timidity, but its playback for
midis is really strange.  I wouldn't characterize the
sound as slow or delayed, really, but it sounds like
the timing of the notes is really off.  I'm running on
a 2.4 ghz processor with 768 mb ram so it shouldn't be
a problem processing I wouldn't think, but I don't
know.  I'm also running kernel 2.6.4.

try running top or some other program that shows load on the machine, it might reveal something...


I noticed that some gnome programs ar really nasty, they'll lock your machine for few seconds (in some cases it looks like they grab X, in oter cases I have no idea what's going on). Try to nice the programs that you suspect might cause problems (e.g. Pan downloading stuff is causing problem, nicing it helps)
