1001 means that the firmware hasn't been loaded. What are the messages in the system log when you plug it in?

Output from /var/log/everything/current which seems related to the Midisport:

I hope this was the kind of output you're after? Your README refers to /var/log/messages, but it doesn't appear on my system (Gentoo). Do I need ezusbmidi as mentioned in another post (not in the README)?
