Hmm, Something like this aplay -D spdif some.wav works ??? If yes Front shouldn't have effect to volume.
If not make sure that Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack and IEC958 Optical Raw Playback Switch are unmuted If it is working. I hope Audigy 2 ZS still uses emu10k2 rev.4, could you check this using lspci ???
