Hmm,

Something like this
aplay -D spdif some.wav works ??? If yes Front shouldn't have effect to volume.

If not make sure that
Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack
and
IEC958 Optical Raw Playback Switch
are unmuted

If it is working.
I hope Audigy 2 ZS still uses emu10k2 rev.4, could you check this
using lspci ???

Could you try rename file(but I think, that it should work without this)

/usr/shara/alsa/conf/cards/Audigy.conf
to
/usr/shara/alsa/conf/cards/Audigy2.conf

keep backup of /usr/shara/alsa/conf/cards/Audigy2.conf

The Audigy and Audigy2 do AC3 passthru slightly differently.
You should be able to output PCM stereo via the spdif on both cards very easily, but the Audigy2 has a bug, that caused the left and right channels to be out of sync by one sample. We wrote a patch for the Audigy2 in Audigy2.conf to swap the channels when doing AC3 passthru.
The Audigy2 ZS might have fixed this bug, and that is why trying the Audigy.conf file instead of the Audigy2.conf file might help you.

If it does help you, we will need to patch the alsa-driver to recognise the Audigy2 ZS as being different from the Audigy2, and will probably move the bug fix into the DSP code, instead of the .conf files.

Please try the test, and report back.

Cheers
James
