The clock _must_ be set to spdif when using the digital input.

Try installing alsa driver from the www.alsa-project.org sources. And
specify just ice1712 as card to be compiled.
'./configure --with-cards=ice1712'

I'll have to check the 2.6 kernel with my card and then I'll get back to
you.
