I am not exactly "an ALSA developer" - I have contributed some driver patches, that's about it. I don't claim to understand alsa-lib nearly as well as I understand the drivers. I don't think it's a problem that the .asoundrc syntax is complicated - it's like SELinux policy, the underlying mechanisms are complicated so the interface can't be simplified too much without losing functionality. .asoundrc was not designed to be readable by Joe User. There's an easy solution, just make the config DTRT by default. We are almost there, this is the last big hurdle AFAICT.
