Something else to keep in mind; my laptop has an NVidia GTX280 card, which
happens not to have its own audio controller. Consequently, audio is instead
routed through an S/PDIF header. I stumbled on this very sort of problem when I
first got the machine, since I wasn't entirely familiar with the hardware
layout. To test, plug your laptop into a TV, make sure the video output is
switched over, and try something like mplayer -ao alsa:device=spdif <videofile>.
