Title IX 40th Anniversary Celebration Game
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 23, 2012

Team USA defeats Canada at Title IX 40th Anniversary Celebration Game

(Oklahoma City, OK) The Canadian Women's National Team played its first game
of the 2012 season and dropped a 9-1 decision to the United States at the Title
IX 40th Anniversary Celebration Game in Oklahoma City. Team USA scored five
runs in the bottom of the second inning and added three more in the bottom of
the fifth to earn the five inning win.

Team Canada started the first inning on the right foot, as Victoria Hayward
(Toronto, ON) forced a leadoff walk but was retired at second on a fielder's
choice by Caitlin Lever (Buffalo, NY). Jenn Yee (North Delta, BC) also drew a
walk to put two runners on base, but Canada was unable to bring them in to
score. In the bottom half of the inning, Rhea Taylor hit a one-out single and
stole second before scoring on a two-out single by Kaitlin Cochran, who was
retired at second when she tried to stretch her hit into a double.

After Canada went down in order in the second, the Americans strung some hits
together and took advantage of some passed balls to put five runs on the board
and take an early 6-0 lead. The red and white would get one run back in the top
of the third, as Hayward and Lever each hit singles before Yee drove in Hayward
with a single of her own. However, the two next batters struck out to end the
threat. In the bottom of the inning, Canadian pitcher Jocelyn Cater (Delta, BC)
allowed a walk and a double, but was able to strand both runners on base. The
following inning, she got two quick outs before allowing a double, a hit by
pitch and a walk, but was once again able to get out of trouble by forcing a
pop out to the catcher to leave the bases loaded.

Carey-Leigh Thomas (Ohsweken, ON), making her first appearance for the Senior
team after representing Canada's Junior Women's National Team in 2011, led off
the top of the fifth with a single and advanced to third, but Canada wasn't
able to score her. In the bottom of the inning, Samantha Fischer hit a leadoff
homerun for the United States, and after a walk and a single, Christine Orgeron
scored both runners with a triple as the United States won the game 9-1 in five
innings due to the run rule.

Jenna Caira (Toronto, ON) took the loss for Canada, allowing six runs on five
hits and two walks in one inning and a third pitched. Cater came on in relief,
throwing two and two thirds scoreless innings allowing two hits and two walks
with three strikeouts. Karissa Hovinga (Edmonton, AB) pitched a third of an
inning in the fifth, allowing three runs on three hits.

The game will air on TSN2 at 11:00pm CDT tonight (June 23).

Box Score and Play-by-Play: Canada 1 vs. United States 9

Both teams will be competing in the US World Cup of Softball VII in Oklahoma
City this week, which will begin on Thursday, June 28th. Canada will open its
tournament schedule with a game against the Netherlands at 11:30am CDT on
Thursday.

Following the US World Cup of Softball VII, Team Canada will return home to
Surrey, British Columbia where they will compete in the Canadian Open Fastpitch
International Championship (July 4-9), followed by the ISF XIII Women's World
Championship in Whitehorse, Yukon (July 13-22).
