US World Cup of Softball VII - Game 3
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 1, 2012

USA Blanks Canada at US World Cup of Softball VII

(Oklahoma City, OK) The Canadian Women's National Team faced yet another tough
game as they took on the United States on the third day of the US World Cup of
Softball VII. The United States put up four runs in both the first and third
innings and held Canada scoreless, allowing them to pick up the 9-0 victory in
five innings.

Despite the lopsided final score, Canada did threaten in the top of the first
inning, as Melanie Matthews (Surrey, BC) led the game off with a single and
moved to second on a single by Jenn Yee (North Delta, BC). However, the next
two batters struck out to end the threat. In the bottom half of the inning, the
United States struck for four runs, highlighted by an RBI single by Kaitlin
Cochran and a three-run homerun off the bat of Stacy May-Johnson.

In the second inning, Joey Lye (Toronto, ON) hit a two-out single and advanced
to second on a wild pitch, but could not advance any further. The following
inning, Matthews smashed a leadoff double and was immediately sacrificed to
third by Victoria Hayward (Toronto, ON), but Canada was unable to bring her
into score. In the bottom half of the inning, Valerie Arioto hit an RBI single
followed by a three-run homerun by Samantha Fischer, giving USA a big 8-0 lead.
After Canada was retired in order, the United States added another run on a
sacrifice fly, and shut down the Canadian offence in the top of the fifth to
win the game on the run-ahead rule.

In the pitcher's circle, Marina Demore (Richmond, BC) took the loss, allowing
seven runs on seven hits and a walk and a strikeout in two innings and a third
pitched. Karissa Hovinga (Edmonton, AB) threw an inning and two thirds of
relief, allowing two runs on five hits with a strikeout.

Team Canada (0-3) will end its round-robin schedule with a doubleheader on
Sunday night, taking on Puerto Rico (0-4) at 5:00pm CDT followed by Brazil
(1-2) at 7:30pm CDT. The United States lead the standings with a 4-0 record,
while Australia and the Netherlands both have a 3-1 record.

Box Score and play by play: Canada 0 vs. United States 9

The game between Canada and the United States will air on TSN2 on July 2nd at
3:00pm EDT, while the Gold medal game will air live at 9:00pm EDT.
