Title: RE: Where are instructions for setting up amandad on clients?

The instructions are there, but not in the way you were expecting.

It says somewhere near the beginning of the server install that the client install is similar.

Here's the quick run-down of what you need to do on the clients (It's a lot easier now that you have the server backing up itself.)

1. Copy the amanda sources from the server.

2. If the server and client are different in OS or hardware, do a 'make distclean'.

3. Go through the same procedure you went through to build the server, except:

        You can use the --without-server parameter during configure;
        You don't need to set up amanda.conf or disklist;
You only need to add amandad to inetd.conf.

Good Luck.

Subject: Where are instructions for setting up amandad on clients?

Hi,

I just spent most of a day confused. And no, this isn't my normal state. :)

I've been reading through the "chapter on amanda" (as linked from amanda.org) in
the section "Configure backup clients". I've got amanda running on the tape host
(which is also the samba server), and now I need to get it backing up the other
UNIX systems, as well as a Linux system.

I did't understand how the amanda host is going to be able to log into all of
the client machines, as I never told it any passwords on those machines (as with
the samba shares). But I just followed the instructions in the "configure backup
clients" section. (I don't know everything about UNIX yet. For example, I had no
clue what inetd.conf was for until a co-worker explained it to me a few minutes
ago.)

When I run amcheck it tells me that each client's "selfcheck requests timed out.
Host down?" A check to the FAQ says to check a bunch of stuff, including this
seemingly bizzare entry:

> If you run the amandad program by hand as the Amanda user on the
> client, what happens?  It should sit for about 30 seconds and then
> terminate.

What happens? It says "command not found" of course! Apparently, at some point,
I was supposed to install some software on the client machines...

In the section "build and install Amanda", towards then end, it talks about
various problems you could run into while installing it. I didn't have any
problems like these, so I kind of skipped over to the "configuring amanda"
section on the next page. Mistake! There is a critical paragraph there, saying
that each *client* needs to have its inetd.conf file modified. But it doesn't
have instructions on installing amandad.

The documentation seems lacking, or I'm just missing information. Here are my
unanswered questions:

1. Where in the documentation does it tell me about installing amandad on each
client?
2. Is each client supposed to have it's own disklist and amanda.conf file too? I
don't think so, but I thought I would check.

Thanks for any help. And if the documentation is truly missing a section on
installing amandad (and other files) onto the client machines, maybe it should
be updated?
