First question: why does "amanda" own /usr/local/var? I would think
that should be root:wheel.
Second question/comment: the modes should be 755, not 766, for this and
the next two layers down.

This is not what Amanda complained about. This is "gnutar-lists".
Amanda complained about "gnutar-disklists". Either change the directory
name or change amanda.conf to point to this directory.
