I removed everything from the /tmp/amanda dir and re-ran amcheck.
Nothing, absolutely nothing shows up in the /tmp/amanda dir - it's mode 0775
amanda:sys

Here's the line for amandad in my /etc/inetd.conf
amanda  dgram   udp     wait    amanda  /usr/local/libexec/amandad amandad
